Silent Spring

Ceramic river rocks float across the wall in this piece named after environmentalist Rachel Carson’s book of the same name. Some vessels contain live plants while others sprout seductively beautiful sculptures made from trash. Brown noise emits from side of the piece while the sound of a spring and bird song from the other.

This piece was conceived for “Shared Visions a Tactile Exhibition” at the Colorado Gallery of the Arts, 2023. This was an exhibition sponsored by Arapahoe Community College in collaboration with the Colorado school for the blind. The planters smooth cool ceramic surfaces are interrupted with texture for visual and tactile interest. The soft organic plants contrast with the hard sharp edges of the human made trash but these sculptures are conscientiously seductive in look and feel. Brown, artificial noice arising from the large trash sculpture on the left transforms into the natural sound of birds and a spring from the large planter on the right. A tactile and sound journey about the impact of forever trash on our natural world.
