Suspended Hives

This piece is inspired by wasp nests. To me these nests are things of natural beauty, architectural wonders containing a complex social structure. The wasp nest is also for a metaphor of the womb. The Queen wasp awakens in the spring as the sole survivor of the colony. She begins the new nest on her own with her saliva and wood pulp to create a kind of paper. She lays previously fertilized eggs into cells from which her daughters emerge to help her continue to build, forage and care for the larva. A small number of males are born after to fertilize the new eggs. From now on the Queens sole function is to lay eggs. Is she Queen or Captive? Would she like the choice to fly free?
